increase in store level sales across 50 sites

    The brief

Scent Central was asked to create a successful fragrance environment for the Ezymart brand. The convenience store industry is a highly competitive marketplace and Ezymart have been exploring different avenues for best practice to make them the premium and most recognised choice in this area of retail.

The aims were to increase store level sales, dwell time and repeat customers.

    Solution

A fragrance machine with a uniquely designed fragrance was placed into each store.

    Result

Across 50 sites in early 2023 in Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, it was found that on average store level sales had increased by 4.4%.

This is consistent with similar research in Belgium in a retail bookstore, which found that customers spent 5.07% more, were three times more likely to engage in conversation with staff and twice as likely to examine multiple items when a scent is present.

    Result

The researchers discovered that employees in a scented environment made 54% fewer typing errors. This was because their cognitive functions were further improved through olfactory stimuli.

    Research

A study out of the University of Vienna included 72 patients between the ages of 22 and 57 while waiting for dental treatment. Ambient odour of orange was diffused in the waiting room through an electrical dispenser in the odour group, whereas in the control group no odour was in the air.

The research assessed, by means of self-report, demographic and cognitive variables, trait and state anxiety, and current pain, mood, alertness and calmness.

    Result

The research concluded that exposure to a natural essential oil of orange has a relaxant effect. Compared to the controls, those exposed to the ambient fragrance had a lower level of state anxiety, a more positive mood, and a higher level of calmness.
