Researchers in Belgium conducted a study over ten days, observing 201 customers in a chain bookstore, that examined whether a chocolate scent positively influenced consumer behaviour within a store environment.
They diffused a chocolate scent through two scent diffusers strategically placed throughout the store and observed the behaviour of shoppers.
The study not only saw an increase in sales of 5.07%, it found that customers were nearly three times more likely to engage in conversation with staff and twice as likely to examine multiple items within the store.
